Boca Raton Salon Suite Owner
Gustavo Troche-Smith is a seasoned hairstylist and colorist. Originally from Puerto Rico, he moved to Miami to open up a private hair studio in Boca Raton, FL. He holds over 14 years of experience as a hairstylist. Additionally, Gustavo specializes in both men’s and women’s color, balayage and highlighting.
Gustavo’s Journey to Cosmetology
Inspired by best friend and hairstylist, Gustavo started doing hair when he was only 13 years old. However, Gustavo pursued fashion design. As a matter of fact, he had the opportunity to work with a few designers. He was published in the Miami Herald for his fashion show and in France for his work at the Monaco Red Cross Ball. Eventually, Gustavo returned to his first love of hair. He studied cosmetology at Beauty Schools of America in North Miami.
Troche-Smith considers himself to be a different type of hairstylist. In addition, he takes pride in listening to his clients and being completely honest with them. Education is key to Gustavo. He gathers everything he needs to know from his clients to ensure that they leave his studio happy. As a stylist, he enjoys defying the rules and making it fun for his clients.
Becoming an Independent Salon Suite Owner
While living in Dallas, Texas, Gustavo worked in a barbershop. He was in a traditional salon setting, where everybody talked. Following his dream as a young stylist, he decided to move to a studio concept. One of the best things about being an independent salon suite owner is having control. Gustavo says this control isn’t just about your money. Maintaining control over the products you use is important as well. Gustavo’s ability to carry quality products creates a better result for his clients.
Gustavo enjoys having the ability to own his own business. He loves the one-on-one attention he provides to clients. During his client’s appointments, it’s their time and no one else’s. He loves making his studio a space for his clients to be comfortable, pamper themselves and relax.
When Gustavo isn’t working in his private Boca Raton studio, he enjoys spending time with his fur baby and 5 feather babies (parrots). He also enjoys working out at the gym.
Advice for Future Hairstylists
“Enjoy your craft and do not look at the money”. As a former cosmetology educator, he would ask his students “why are you here?”. He would go on to say: ” If you’re here just for the money you’re not going to be successful. You have to be here because you love what you do. It’s great to earn money doing what you love, but you have to feel the passion for your craft. You have to be able to do it regardless of the outcome, moneywise.” Gustavo also says you have to be able to give sometimes without the expectation of receiving. Operating in this mindset will take you to higher places.
